How Do You Clean Grout?

It’s all well and good choosing beautiful Italian polished porcelain wall tiles for your bathroom, but they’ll only stay beautiful if you look after them and clean them properly.

While the tiles themselves will wipe clean easily enough, the area that often presents a problem for homeowners is the grout. Grimy-looking grout can make a whole bathroom look far from pristine, so how do you keep it clean and ensure your tiles continue to shine?

CountryLiving recently offered some advice, including one top tip which is to choose a darker coloured grout in the first place, as this won’t show the dirt up quite as easily as pure white.

The publication noted that it’s often the simplest solutions that work the best. Bleach, for instance, isn’t a great option for cleaning grout because it’s a harsh chemical that can actually discolour it, even if it does remove all the bacteria in the process.

A better way to clean the grout in your bathroom or kitchen tiles is to use hot water and a scrubbing brush. If your grout isn’t too dirty, this should do the trick, but if you need something a little stronger, mix in half a cup of baking soda, a quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide and a teaspoon of dish soap.

Simply apply the mix to the grout and let it sit for a few minutes before you give it a good scrub and rinse it off.

Using these kinds of remedies, rather than something packed with harmful chemicals, is much better for you and for your home. If you’ve been looking for ways to go green in your kitchen and bathroom, this could be a good thing to consider.

We recently offered some top tips on how to have a more eco-friendly kitchen, including thinking carefully about the materials you use when you upgrade this space.
