New Bathrooms Among Most Popular DIY Job

Most property owners like to put their own stamp on a home when they first get the keys, and one of the most popular renovation jobs is installing a new bathroom.

This is according to the latest research from GoCompare Home Insurance, which revealed 29 per cent of the home improvements carried out in the last five years have been to fit a new washroom with stylish London bathroom tiles in their property.

A recent survey conducted by the insurer found the majority of people (68 per cent) carry out DIY jobs to improve their home’s appearance, while just 38 per cent do so for essential maintenance work.

Ben Wilson from GoCompare Home Insurance reminded homeowners, however, to make sure they check whether their improvement plans are covered by their insurer.

“While you don’t need to inform your insurer about routine decorating or maintenance, it’s a worthwhile precaution to check whether you’re covered for accidental damage,” he stated.

Indeed, while 87 per cent of property owners have instructed home improvement works on their residences since 2013, only 25 per cent of these told their insurance provider of their plans.

Among the other popular jobs homeowners like to do to make their house or flat feel more homely is replace the floor or carpet (with 31 per cent doing this); have a garden makeover (25 per cent); fit a new kitchen (25 per cent); and improve the look of the exterior of the property (13 per cent).

For those keen on updating their bathroom, the Irish Times told readers to add a splash of colour to make a “strong style statement” and make the room really stand out.
